Maps Are Good.

I like maps. I got a trial copy of Microsoft S&T, Europe version, here. I also am now a fan of www.hrs.com for hotel reservations.

Looks like Frankfurt to Montegufoni is about 1200 km, a little over 700 miles, which is an easy long day on a western USA Interstate, but we'll take it in two days. That may be rushing it - I would have liked to get to Frankfurt a day earlier, but the plane schedules worked out this way, so that's what we're doing.

Here's our southbound route - we're staying the night in Austria:

It feels kinda funky to be planning on visiting three countries in two days, when it can take three days to get across one USA state (Texas - and several days for Alaska!)

The longest day I traveled in my car was Boulder to Chicago - about 1000 miles, 20 hours. The longest day on the motorcycle was 640 miles - to be tech support in Idaho for a National Geographic Trek. The shortest miles and longest hours was the day I rode the Icefields Parkway in Canada. That was an amazing 125 miles that took a full day because I stopped so many times to take pictures and gaze at the scenery. I'm thinking that this Europe trip should be undertaken the same way. Few miles, many hours gazing.

We haven't made reservations for northbound back to Frankfurt. We probably will get all sorts of ideas of places to go and things to see, so we're leaving that part of the trip up to serendipity.
