Iceland Sights

I spent six hours in the air with the taste-memory of home-smoked hangikjöt and skyr cake on my tongue, and the sound-memory of the humming-drumming noise of the snipe in my ears. Mom and I laughed over the memories evoked by the photos we browsed on my laptop during the flight. (Yay, electrical plugs on airplanes.)

Here are some memories - maybe you can get to Iceland sometime soon and make some of your own.

The Icelandic phonebook, where people are listed by first name, followed sometimes by their profession, then their address:

Goðafoss, where the Sagas tell us that Þorgeir of Ljósavatn threw his statues of the gods into the falls when Icelanders decided to convert to Christianity in the year 1000:

Mývatn lagoon (old one, not the one that is now a spa) & geothermal steam, just past midnight:

Music festival "Úlfaldi úr mýflugu" (Camel from a Midge) @ Myvatn:

There are view dials everywhere. Here's the one at Bláfell (the mountain just to the left of the pointer in this view):

Lava & water & rock walls:

Monuments:

Fog hiding the landscape where I had left myself a note in our travel guide that I should take pictures of the view:

Motorcycles:

Mom played pump organs all over:

Lava:

Cozy bedroom:

Walking behind Seljalandsfoss on the way to Skógar:

Jökulhlaup (eruption-caused glacial flooding) damage – lots of deposition under bridges will need to be dredged out to protect bridges from the next flood:

Museum exhibit:

Sod-roofed house:

Stern-faced old lady in an old drawing:

That's enough for now - I'll post more tomorrow.
